Choosing a Binding Machine for 500-Page Manuals

A 500-page manual is thick: that is 250 sheets if printed double-sided, or 500 single-sided. Two specs decide whether a machine can handle it: how thick a book it can bind, and how many sheets it punches per lift.

1. Work out your book thickness

Count sheets, not pages: a 500-page manual printed on both sides is 250 sheets. Ask your printer for the caliper (thickness) of your paper, or measure a stack, and add the covers. That figure must fit the machine's binding capacity, which the maker states in inches or sheets.

2. Binding type sets the ceiling

Examples are copied from sourced spec sheets in our catalog; check the exact model.

3. Punch capacity sets the time

Punch capacity is sheets per lift: a 250-sheet manual at 20 sheets per lift is about 13 lifts per book. Electric punches save effort on long runs. Stated punch capacity in our catalog ranges from 10 to 55 sheets per lift (42 models state a figure).

Sources

All figures on this page come from the manufacturer spec sheets linked on each model page.

Catalog figures on this page are counted live from the sourced spec sheets in our binding machines catalog (72 models), so they match the category page. We don't test machines or publish prices, and model lists here take each maker in turn, alphabetically within a maker; they are filters, not rankings.
