Hard Drive & Media Destruction: A Buying Guide
Deleting files or reformatting doesn't remove data from a drive. To retire hard drives, SSDs, phones and discs safely, organizations physically destroy them or erase magnetic media with a degausser.
The quick rule: match the method to the media you retire (degaussing works only on magnetic media, not SSDs or flash), then match the security level to your data and the throughput to how many drives you handle.
What to look for
- Method. Shredders cut drives into strips or particles; crushers and punches deform the platters or chips; disintegrators grind media down to a screen size; degaussers erase magnetic media with a strong field.
- Media type. Hard drives, SSDs and flash, and optical discs each need suitable equipment. SSDs need a small particle size or a spike/tooth crusher; a degausser doesn't affect SSDs or flash.
- Security level. DIN 66399 classes media by type: H (hard drives), E (electronic/flash), O (optical), T (magnetic tape), each from 1 to 7. Some makers state NSA/CSS listing instead.
- Throughput and cycle time. Drives per hour or seconds per drive, at the maker's stated media size.
- Power and space. Large shredders and disintegrators may need 208-480 V, three-phase or a dedicated circuit, and weigh more than 1,000 lb. Manual crushers need no power.
- Verification. Some machines record the destruction on camera; check each model's spec sheet.
Models in the catalog
The hard drive & media destruction catalog lists 80 current models with manufacturer specifications, sources and photos: BOW Industries (2) · Datastroyer (37) · Formax (5) · HSM (3) · Intimus (9) · Phiston (11) · Proton (13). Brands are listed alphabetically.
We don't name a “best” model or rank brands. The right machine depends on your volume, stock and space, so filter the catalog on the specs above. We don't list prices; most of these machines are sold through authorized dealers.
