Guillotine Paper Cutter Maintenance: Blades and Cutting Sticks

A guillotine cutter needs two kinds of routine care: turning or replacing the cutting stick, and sharpening or swapping the blade. Both are simple to plan for, and manufacturers document how.

Safety first: blades are dangerous even when the machine is off. Follow the maker's manual, use its blade-changing tool, and never carry a blade unprotected. The Triumph 4705 manual, for example, warns never to leave the blade unattended or transport it without protection.[1]

The cutting stick

The cutting stick is the strip the blade presses into at the end of each cut. When the bottom sheets stop cutting cleanly, the stick is worn where the blade meets it. Many sticks can be turned to a fresh face: the Triumph 4705 manual says its cutting stick can be turned or exchanged and used eight times.[1] Keep spares; makers sell them in packs.

The blade

A dull blade leaves ragged edges and can make the top sheet come out a different size from the bottom sheet. MBM's FAQ names a dull blade as the most likely cause of that and recommends regular sharpening; it suggests asking your MBM dealer or a local blade sharpening shop.[2] Keep a second blade so the cutter keeps working while one is out for sharpening.

Changing the blade

Use the maker's blade changing tool and follow its sequence exactly. The Triumph manual walks through fitting the exchange blade to the tool, seating it in the carrier, lowering it to the cutting stick and tightening the blade screws.[1] If you aren't trained, have a dealer do it.

Catalog figures on this page are counted live from the sourced spec sheets in our guillotine paper cutters catalog (39 models), so they match the category page. We don't test machines or publish prices, and model lists here take each maker in turn, alphabetically within a maker; they are filters, not rankings.
